Charlie Horse and Pregnancy??

Ok...I am not sure if any of you women have this problem...but it seems like in the last two months of pregnancy I always have horrible charlie horses during the night!!! I mean BAD. I hear it's pretty common. Why?? I had a few with Brampton...but with this pregnancy I wake up every night with tight calf muscles and I have had 2 charlie horses in the past week. I hate them. My calf is then sore for a few days. I read that you should drink lots of orange juice and eat a banana a day. Well...I can't do the banana part (allergic ever since I had Brampton...weird). Any other words of advice????

I had them too. Lack of potassium. If banana is a no go...I'd say, pickle juice...which is sick! Call the doc and ask if you can take potassium pills.

I heard gatorade helps, but I'm not sure, never really tried it. But when I lived with grandma and grandpa, grandpa would get them and he drank gatorade.

Not that telling you I had them too helps you at all, but I feel your pain. I'm always a proponent for stretching. I remember with Carsen getting my foot stuck in a pointed position and having to wake up Jason to have him stretch it back for me. I found with Gaven that a little bit of stretching before bed seemed to help??

I had them too in addition to "restless leg syndrom". Not fun at all. I would be interested too if you find out anything to "fix" the problem!

Clearly you are not alone in this matter...I had them too, definitly potassium. It looks like you got a helpful little list of foods there. You are set!

Gosh, I just started getting them this past week, so far they haven't been as bad as with James. I use to wake up screaming and Matt would have to wake me up and stretch my foot. Remember to always stretch with your heel!!! Stretching right before you sleeps really helps...do it with your heel or runners stretch for your calf if you know what that means. (Put the ball of your foot up against the wall and your heel on the ground and then lean your body toward the wall). That usually helps lessen the intensity, but always remember to "push your heel" and not your toe when they come on. Oh yea lots and lots of milk works for me too. (Sorry so long)

I've been getting charlie horses myself and i've still got a little over 3 months left! :) It's terrible ... so if you get any good tips please tell me!

Oh yeah, I got these a lot! As soon as I feel one coming on I would just stretch my calf as much as possible. I don't know anything else that works but let us know what you find out!
To the person who mentioned Restless Leg...I had it REALLY bad with my last pregnancy and just happened to read that it's usually related to an iron deficiency! My doc had TOLD me to take iron pills and I didn't...oops. Anyway, I started taking them and the RLS went away within a couple days. MAGIC!
Anyway, I hope you can make it through the next 50 days!
